Have a Senior Moment in Pasadena, Disc Golf Style!

What does the PDGA State Coordinator do?  Well, aside from coordinate the schedules of all PDGA-sanctioned tournaments in Southern California, Suzette Simons always has her ear to the ground, listening for new possibilities to get more people playing disc golf.  One example of this is the upcoming Senior Olympic Games being held in Pasadena at Oak Grove.  Senior Olympics is a big organization, with hundreds of events held each year across the U.S.  Getting disc golf included is a great way to get our sport accepted in the mainstream of organized sports.  Suzette heard about the Senior Olympics movement and signed up disc golf to be included.  Then she did another smart thing:  she convinced Mark and Susie Horn to volunteer to be the event directors for the Pasadena Senior Olympics disc golf event.  2013 will be the third year that disc golf will be included in the Pasadena Senior Olympic games.  Mark recently sent out this email regarding this year’s event, being held on June 15th:

Greetings to all you seniors. I am writing to you to encourage you to consider coming out and playing in the Senior Olympic games disc golf event at oak grove on June 15th. It is a one day event and I would really like to see it grow to something big and it would be a shot in the arm to our sport to have a big turnout for an event that gets some national coverage. Cost is only $42 dollars and you get a t-shirt and lunch included. We will play one round of golf on the regular Oak Grove layout and one round on the championship layout. It is a truly fun event. or you can send me the money and I will enter for you. If you choose to send me the money then I have to have all the info so I can fill out the entry form properly. They give out medals to the top three in every group. Groups are broken into 5 year increments starting at 50-54, 55-59 etc. Sooo, come on out and have a great day playing golf with your peers for the sheer fun of it. If you have any questions call me. While it scares me to think that 50 is included in the Senior Olympics, I think it’s great that disc golf is included.  If you live in the L.A. basin, please consider signing up and filling the field!  And keep your eyes and ears open (turn up hearing aids, if neccessary)!  The California State Senior Games Championships will be held in the San Diego Area in September, 2013, and we hope to have disc golf included there as well.
