2012 – Year-end Wrap-up

Well, 2012 is winding down, and it was a big year for disc golf in SoCal.  Eighteen events on the SoCal Series schedule (and it seemed half of them were run by Gary “Ironman” Sandoval!), a new ball golf/disc golf course in the SoCal Series (Verdugo Hills), a SoCal Series tournament with three venues in one day (Cannonball Run), the return of Eldo to the schedule, seven Ice Bowls, new courses all over (Murrieta, Vista, Burbank, Lompoc, Redlands and other private courses, I’m sure), rapid growth by Legacy and continued Innova-tion from Innova, great play from upstarts and old farts alike and a PDGA World Champion with SoCal roots.  Whew.  The SoCal Disc Golf Club also saw some changes, with a new crop of board members, new website, Facebook and Twitter presences.

The competition throughout the SoCal Series was hot.  Steve Rico held the lead in Men’s Open all year, but always had Philo and Max Nichols nipping at his heels.  Indigo Brude took the Ladies’ Open title, and almost won Men’s Rec too! A.J. Risley won Men’s Advanced and finished 5th in Men’s Open – he played enough events to collect the most points by any player this year (438).  But the closest race of the year was in Men’s Pro Grandmasters, where Steve Killian and Todd Banks both finished with 112 points.  Steve won the title based on the tie-breaker: playing more events.  The Champions of the SoCal Series were honored at the year-end banquet last Saturday at Prado Regional Park.  Suzette Simons, Vicky Wisecup and Randy Wylot put on a fantastic event with good competition, great food and an extensive prize raffle.  We would also like to acknowledge all of the SoCal Series Champions here:

We’re looking forward to a great  SoCal Disc Golf 2013.  An expanded schedule, including the return of events at Huntington Beach and La Mirada is in the works.  We have been blessed with a great group of TDs and volunteers, and of course a great group of players.  Help us make SoCal better by renewing your membership, and bringing along a few friends as members and volunteers.  The future is bright for disc golf in SoCal!
